Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Eights ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Eights mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use our App, and describes your rights under applicable privacy laws including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the Privacy Act 1988 (Australia).

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

Our legal basis for processing personal data is: (a) your consent, given at onboarding; (b) the performance of our contract with you (providing the App's services); and (c) our legitimate interests in improving the App and preventing fraud.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide directly

Your first name or chosen display name
Your date, time, and place of birth — used exclusively to calculate your natal astrological chart
Your in-app preferences: chosen guide, intention, and delivery style

Information collected automatically

A randomly generated anonymous identifier, stored in your device's secure Keychain. This identifier is used to personalise your experience over time and does not identify you personally.
Anonymous interaction data: which features you use (daily message, weekly reading, monthly reading, topic taps), how you react to content (positive, neutral, or negative reactions), and engagement frequency
Device type, operating system version, and app version, for diagnostic and compatibility purposes

Information we do not collect

We do not collect your full name, email address, or contact details through the App itself, except where you voluntarily subscribe to our newsletter
We do not collect the text of your custom questions — only that a question was asked
We do not collect payment information directly — all payments are processed by Apple through the App Store
We do not collect location data beyond the place of birth you voluntarily provide

3. How we use your information

To calculate your natal astrological chart and generate personalised daily, weekly, and monthly readings
To improve the accuracy and relevance of your readings over time based on your interaction patterns
To operate, maintain, and improve the App
To detect and prevent fraud or abuse
To comply with our legal obligations

We use Anthropic's Claude API to generate your readings. Your birth data, preferences, and anonymised interaction summary are transmitted to Anthropic's API for this purpose. Anthropic processes this data in accordance with their privacy policy, available at anthropic.com/privacy. We transmit only what is necessary to generate your reading.

4. Data storage and retention

Your birth data and preferences are stored locally on your device. Anonymous interaction data is stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure, hosted in the European Union (WEUR region), which complies with EU data protection standards.

We retain anonymous interaction data for up to 12 months, after which it is automatically deleted. Local data on your device is retained until you delete the App.

5. Data sharing and third parties

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party.

We share data only with the following service providers, strictly for the purpose of operating the App:

Anthropic — AI content generation (anthropic.com)
Cloudflare — Infrastructure and data storage (cloudflare.com)
Apple — App distribution and payment processing (apple.com)

All third-party providers are contractually required to process your data only as instructed by us and in compliance with applicable privacy laws.

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, court order, or governmental authority.

6. Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 where applicable under local law). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under these ages. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@eights.app and we will delete it promptly.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Right of access — to request a copy of the data we hold about you
Right of rectification — to request correction of inaccurate data
Right of erasure — to request deletion of your data
Right to restrict processing — to request that we limit how we use your data
Right to data portability — to receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
Right to object — to object to processing based on legitimate interests
Right to withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at hello@eights.app. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Deleting the App from your device immediately removes all locally stored data. To request deletion of server-side interaction data, contact us directly.

8. California residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to delete your personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale of your personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact us at hello@eights.app.

9. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Your device identifier is stored in the iOS Keychain, which uses hardware-level encryption. All data transmitted to our servers uses HTTPS encryption. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
